I am not talking about river cruising from a brochure. I have personally sailed the Danube with Emerald Waterways, and I have sailed with Avalon Waterways twice, once through France along the Rhône and Saône through Avignon, Arles, and Lyon, and once along the Rhine. Each sailing was different. Each one was extraordinary in its own way. And each one taught me something new about why this style of travel works so well for so many different kinds of people.

And that can be wonderful. But a river cruise through the Christmas Market region is an entirely different experience and I want to explain why.

Your ship is your home base and it moves while you sleep. You wake up in Nuremberg one morning. Regensburg the next. Melk the day after that. Then Passau. Each port has its own market. Its own personality. Its own specialty foods and crafts and traditions. Nuremberg is famous for its Christkindlesmarkt which is one of the oldest and most beloved Christmas markets in the entire world. Regensburg has a medieval old town that feels like a movie set. Melk sits above the river with its stunning Benedictine abbey looking down over the valley. Passau sits at the confluence of three rivers and its market fills the town center in a way that feels completely unlike anywhere else. And Vienna, Vienna at Christmas is Vienna at its absolute finest.

You experience all of it. From one ship. With your luggage unpacked once.

And then you come home and you understand why people who have done a Christmas Market river cruise talk about it the way they do.

This is the question I get asked most often when I bring up Christmas Market cruises and the answer is simple. The ships are small and the demand is enormous.

A river cruise ship carries somewhere between 100 and 200 guests depending on the line and vessel. Compare that to an ocean cruise ship carrying 3,000 to 5,000 people.
