The Best Airport for Berks County Travelers: PHL vs EWR vs ABE vs MDT

As a Berks County travel agent, I book flights out of all four of these airports every week, and I have a strong opinion on which one makes sense for each kind of trip.

When we talk about flying from Reading, PA, and nearby Schuylkill County, we are really talking about four airports: Philadelphia International (PHL), Newark Liberty International (EWR), Lehigh Valley International (ABE) in Allentown, and Harrisburg International (MDT). Each one has a role, and each one has trade-offs.

Here is how I think about them, and how I actually book my own travel.

I get asked this all the time. I live here in Berks County too, and I work with plenty of travelers from Schuylkill County, and yes, Philadelphia is closer. But when I am booking my own travel, Newark almost always wins. Here is why.

The schedules are better to Europe, and often to the Caribbean too. Newark has significantly more nonstop options to Europe than Philadelphia, and you will also find more weekend nonstops to Caribbean destinations, especially on United. When you are flying to a river cruise embarkation city or a Christmas market gateway, being able to fly nonstop and skip a connection is huge. Fewer things go wrong. Your luggage stays with you. You arrive rested.

I have status with United. Newark is a United hub, so my miles, my upgrades, and my recognition all work harder there. If you have status with an airline, flying from that airline's hub changes the entire experience. It is worth the extra 30 to 45 minutes in the car. That said, Newark is not only a United airport. You will find many different carriers there, so there are options no matter who you prefer to fly with.

They are typically cheaper. This one surprises people, because Philadelphia is the largest international airport in the area and many travelers automatically assume it is the best option. I usually ask my clients: are you willing to drive to Newark if it saves you money? Nine times out of ten, Newark comes in below Philadelphia on transatlantic fares, and often to the Caribbean as well. I do not want to say always, because occasionally PHL will have a great deal or a fare sale. But the pattern is very consistent.

One note on the drive: from Berks County, we typically do not use the New Jersey Turnpike to reach Newark. The route is straightforward, and for me the extra drive time is more than worth the better schedule and fare.

That is my honest take. Newark is not the closest, but for international travel and many Caribbean trips it is almost always the smartest option for Berks County and Schuylkill County travelers.

Philadelphia earns its keep for a lot of trips. It is the closest large hub to Reading, it is a major American Airlines hub, and it has strong nonstop coverage across the US and Caribbean. If you are loyal to American or the oneworld alliance, if you are heading to the Caribbean, or if you are taking a domestic trip with a good nonstop from PHL, that is your airport.

PHL also has some solid European nonstops, London, Dublin, Madrid, Rome, Frankfurt seasonally. If the fare and schedule work, taking PHL and saving the extra drive is completely reasonable.

I love that we have Lehigh Valley (ABE) 45 minutes away and Harrisburg (MDT) about an hour west. On paper, they are dream airports for Berks County. Short drive, easy parking, quick security.

But here is the honest reality. You typically will not find a nonstop to your final destination from either one. Almost every trip out of ABE or MDT involves connecting through a hub, and that convenience carries a premium. Fares tend to run noticeably higher than PHL or EWR for the same destination.

That does not mean skip them. For a short domestic trip where the schedule works and the total door-to-door time comes out even, ABE or MDT can be a great choice. Sometimes the extra fare is worth the two hours you save on either end.

But for international travel, especially Europe? I almost always send my clients to Newark or Philadelphia.

When I am building an itinerary for a Berks County or Schuylkill County client, I am weighing four things at once:

• Destination. International vs. domestic, and whether a nonstop exists.
• Loyalty program. Which airline the client already flies with, and where their status or miles will work hardest.
• Fare and schedule. The actual price difference and departure times, not just the sticker fare.
• Total travel day. Drive time, parking, security, and how the connection (if any) affects arrival.

Sometimes the answer is the closest airport. Sometimes it is the one two hours away. The right answer changes trip by trip, and that is exactly the kind of detail a good Berks County travel agent is thinking about while you are focused on packing.
